When Is it Time to Quit?

Picking and Choosing in Self Employment

The assignments are piling up and self employment seems to be a success. But at some point, workers may need to cut back. When is it time to quit?

When is it time to quit a self employment gig or work at home job? This is the question which plagues many go-it-alone professionals, but picking and choosing in self employment is no easy task.

How Many Jobs Is Too Many Jobs?

Wait a minute…isn’t having work to do in self employment supposed to be a good thing? Don’t all work at home professionals strive to land gigs, get jobs, make contacts and very simply find work? Why should these same professionals then proceed to toss jobs away, to walk away or to quit? The question is not when is it time to quit - but how many jobs is too many jobs?

Picking and Choosing in Self Employment

When work at home professionals find they have to start picking and choosing between different jobs, self employment success is no longer an objective but a goal truly realized. When it’s time to start cutting back on job searches because there are too many projects already in the till, this is a wonderful sign of work at home prosperity. This is also a very dangerous sign of being overloaded. Picking and choosing in self employment may not be easy, but sometimes it’s necessary.

When Is it Time to Quit?

Jobs are rolling in and so is the money. But self employment is a career which must be constantly managed and maintained. No professional, even one who enjoys work from home, wants to spend 14 hours every day on the job. Having a lot of work to do is an obvious sign of success, but it’s a certain harbinger of doom as well. It’s easy to get burnt-out, bored, overloaded and (as a result) over-stressed. When is it time to quit certain self employment gigs? When keeping them means doing way, way too much for a single working day.

The Work at Home Job Assessment

Income flow is stable, enough so that it wouldn’t hurt to cut back on a few gigs. Work is very steady - in fact, so much so that it’s taking way too long to get through a single self employed day. The stress of having too many deadlines is starting to take a toll. When all these truths are evident in the self employment lifestyle, it’s no longer a question of whether or not it’s time to quit certain jobs. It’s a must.

Some jobs are more rewarding financially than others, while some jobs reward more exposure or reputation. Little-known company A may pay extraordinarily well, but the work done for this company is presented to a tiny audience. Well-known company B pays peanuts, but the work is showcased far and wide. This is actually a very difficult decision to make. Exposure for exposure’s sake is probably worth more than its weight in gold…but without the gold, work at home professionals don’t get to eat.

Picking and Quitting

When deciding which gigs to keep and which gigs to quit, do the math first. Exposure is fabulous, but it doesn’t pay the bills (at least, not directly). First, eliminate the jobs which take the most time and pay the least amount of money. Then, get around to the fine nuances (which offers the best exposure, which has a stronger future of offer more work to sustain the professional, etc.) of picking and choosing.
