How Self-Employed Persons can Make Full Use of Their Breaks

Sep 2, 2009 Maria Zain

These are suggestions on how freelancers should take advantage of their breaks between their projects. These breaks are also as important as time spent working.

Despite busy work schedules, multiple projects and many deadlines, freelancers also face 'free time' slots, when they are left between projects or are looking for new work after completing a job. Free time slots can be very frustrating for some freelancers who feel compelled to continue working, whether it is out of passion or due to financial obligations.

It is important for freelancers to realise that these breaks are indeed as beneficial to their freelancing careers as the freelance projects themselves.

Freelancers Should Catch-up with Existing Clients

Freelancing can mean a hectic lifestyle and along the way, freelancers may lose touch with existing clients. Sending a simple courteous email is a simple method to enhance client relationships. Further work opportunities may arise and the need to be relevant in the mind of a client is important.

Freelancers who keep up with clients are also keeping up with the market trends of industries that are important to them. Understanding the client and the market's needs is important and the best way to do this is to speak to companies or individuals who are in the market. Thus, keeping lines of communication with clients open helps gauge new ideas and initiatives in the market and translates into further opportunities for freelancers themselves.

Freelancers can Clear with Administrative Backlog

Freelancers with free time slots should take the opportunity to clear administrative backlog. Freelancers can easily take advantage of breaks to follow up on outstanding invoices, complete filing and even update a resume.

Working on projects is time consuming and administrative work can be easily left behind. Free time means there is also more time to become organised. Getting rid of administrative backlog allows a freelancer to clear his or her mind before embarking upon new projects.

Freelancers can Brainstorm New Ideas

Freelancers on breaks have time to fulfill their passion of their freelance careers by brainstorming new ideas. Being a freelancer requires one to be innovative and continuously looking for new career opportunities. Freelancers should take advantage of their free time slots to come up with new ideas for new projects. Taking the initiative to start a new venture or approach a client, rather than wait and respond to market of clientele requests, is a key factor for freelancing success.

Freelancers should Really Just Take a Break

Freelancers should really take some time off work if it is needed. Just like with any other form of employment, this reduces the chances of burn out.

Even if a freelancing career is extremely fulfilling, it is a good idea for freelancers to literally take a break from their working lives. Staying away from the computer and the office for a while, reading a good book or even taking a holiday that will allow complete relaxation away from work is a fantastic idea.

Freelancers who take breaks between jobs will be able to come back to their work with open minds and a new sense of energy before resuming their hectic work schedules.
