Tips on how to network with other freelance writers which can help bring freelance writing jobs when you least expect them.

Building a freelance writing career can often be a lonely profession starting out, especially when it comes to finding decent paying freelance writing gigs. Most freelance writers think they are home free once they find a decent paying gig that they feel is worth their time and effort. But building a writing career is grueling. It takes persistance and a lot of patience and every little bit that you do will help in the long run.

But building the freelance writing career of your dreams isn't only about finding decent writing jobs. It's what happens before finding a writing job and during these jobs that is most valuable and will aid you in your journey.

Network with Other Freelance Writers

Networking is the key that is the responsible for the success of many freelance writers. Plan to network at least once a week using online live communities like livejournal. Because live journal communities are by nature often supportive, many freelance writers share their secrets, offer feedback and advice and can connect you with other freelance writers who in turn, may represent a writing company, a freelance writing opportunity or a job board. Some provide weekly newsletters, which is a perfect way to start out looking for freelance writing employment.

Hold that Writing Job

Freelance writing is not only about writing. It's a back and forth communication. Some jobs offer one-on-one free editing and writing coaching as part of the freelance writing job. Take advantage of these helpful seminars as your editors might provide you with one or more of the following:

  • Important editing tools
  • The ins and outs of how to make your articles more Web-friendly and readable
  • Seminars on SEOs (Search Engine Optimization)
  • Elements on style, audience, voice

Once you have passed a probationary training period, you can take a bit of a breather and use all you have learned to build your portfolio and add to your growing collection of writing clips. Of course, you shouldn't hesitate to market your successes and knowledge in your cover letters.

Search Jobs for Writers Using a Networking Atittude

Whenever you apply for a freelance writing job, use net business etiquette as part of the networking concept especially for those online freelance writing jobs that are housed under a website. In your cover letter you could do one or more of the following things:

  • Express how you've enjoyed navigating their website
  • Compliment on one or more of its features
  • Add a personal and helpful comment on one or more aspects of the website

Good luck! The road to building a freelance writing career is long and arduous, but sometimes some simple tips can go a long way.
