Many believe that creating a perfect resume is the key to a great career. Is it that simple? Does the perfect resume exist? Is it reality, or self employed pipe dream?

Self-employed professionals get a lot of use out of their resumes. Where most professionals may use their employment history every few years, it’s not unthinkable for those who are self-employed to use their resumes every few days. Self employment means always looking for new clients, new jobs, new opportunities – and that directly translates into a lot of different parties looking at the self-employed resume.

When a resume is that important, it needs to be perfect, right? Creating a perfect resume may seem like the answer to finding self employment gigs, clients, and jobs…but how realistic is the goal of perfection? Can self-employed professionals do it? Can anyone create the perfect resume, one that’s sure to get them hired?

No. Resumes, especially self-employed resumes, are always changing, being added to, improving. Creating a perfect resume is an ongoing process that, unfortunately, won’t ever end. All self-employed professionals need to keep their resumes as up-to-date as possible, to display a wide range of skills and completed assignments. The perfect resume is the one that’s the most current and up-to-date, but a resume should also be highly stylized to grab the attention of potential clients, customers, and employers.

What do employers think the perfect resume should have? To grab their attention, self-employed professionals should present a resume that’s easy to read, clean (no clip art, highly stylized fonts, or extras around the margins), and full of relevant information. Every resume should fill only a single, standard size page – even when there’s loads of jobs and information to present.

Use simple, spacey formatting to make resumes easier to read – employers don’t want to work too hard to find the information that’s important to them. When self employment is the goal, the resume has to already be ready for presentation. Self employment is one career where the resume is a calling card, a mini-biography, the key to getting that well-paying gig. Make it beautiful to make it shine.

Learn how to turn a self employed resume into an attention-getter, because if a self employed professional can make their resume look great they stand a much better chance of getting the job. The self employed market is highly competitive, and creating the perfect resume is one surefire way to stand apart from the pack.

Knowing how to write a resume is the key to self employment success. Keep it simple, keep it organized, and keep it updated. Creating the perfect resume is an ongoing mission, but it’s one that can definitely pay off. For more information on fine-tuning and getting that great job, check out Career Advice.
